Common questions about Houston flood risk
How do I find out what FEMA flood zone my Houston home is in?
Enter your address on Floodfolio to instantly see your FEMA flood zone designation pulled directly from the FEMA National Flood Hazard Layer (NFHL). You'll also see your ground elevation compared to the Base Flood Elevation for your zone.
What is the difference between FEMA Zone AE and Zone X in Houston?
Zone AE is a Special Flood Hazard Area with a 1% annual chance of flooding (the 100-year floodplain). Flood insurance is required for federally-backed mortgages in Zone AE. Zone X indicates lower risk, either the 500-year floodplain (shaded X) or minimal risk (unshaded X). Much of greater Houston sits in Zone AE due to flat terrain and heavy rainfall.
Do I need flood insurance if my Houston home is in Zone X?
Flood insurance is not federally required in Zone X, but approximately 25% of all NFIP flood claims nationally come from properties outside the Special Flood Hazard Area. Houston's flat topography and intense rainfall mean Zone X properties can and do flood. Consulting a licensed insurance professional is recommended.
What data sources does Floodfolio use?
Floodfolio sources data from three U.S. government databases: FEMA National Flood Hazard Layer (NFHL) for flood zone boundaries and Base Flood Elevations, USGS LiDAR for ground elevation (1-meter resolution), and OpenFEMA NFIP Claims for historical insurance claim records.
How much does a Floodfolio flood risk report cost?
Floodfolio offers two report tiers. The Essential Report is $19.99 and includes FEMA zone, ground elevation, Base Flood Elevation, freeboard, and risk score. The Full Report is $44.99 and adds an interactive FEMA satellite map, 14-storm NFIP claim history, repetitive loss data, and PDF export. Both are one-time payments with no account required.
Did Hurricane Harvey affect flood zones in Houston?
Hurricane Harvey (August 2017) caused catastrophic flooding across greater Houston, including in areas outside the mapped 100-year floodplain. FEMA has updated flood maps in several Houston-area counties since Harvey. Floodfolio uses the most current NFHL data available.
Floodfolio provides data for informational reference only. Modeled flood risk estimates are not guarantees. How you weigh this is a decision for you and your advisors.
